what is eudaimonia?
pronounced "yoo-day-moh-nee-uh", is an ancient greek word that is often translated as "happiness," "well-being," or "human flourishing." however, these english translations don't fully capture the depth and complexity of the concept as understood by greek philosophers
in essence, eudaimonia is a comprehensive concept of living a good life that emphasizes moral virtue, rational activity, and the realization of one's full human potential, leading to a deep and lasting sense of well-being and flourishing
not just a feeling : unlike the modern understanding of "happiness", eudaimonia is not about fleeting pleasure or a subjective state of mind, but rather an objective state of living well and doing well, achieved by living a life in accordance with virtue and reason to reach one's full human potential. it's not about feeling good in the moment, but about a deeper, more enduring sense of fulfillment.
achieved through virtue and excellence : eudaimonia is fundamentally linked to living a virtuous life. it involves the proper development and exercise of one's highest human capabilities, especially reason. this means cultivating intellectual virtues (like wisdom and understanding) and moral virtues (like courage, justice, and temperance). a "eudaimonic" person is one who exhibits excellence in these areas.
the highest human good : eudaimonia is the ultimate goal or purpose of human life. it is something desired for its own sake, rather than a means to achieve something else.
requires active engagement : eudaimonia is not a passive state but an active pursuit. it involves continuous effort, personal growth, and taking on challenges that lead to self-realization and the pursuit of excellence.
a state of flourishing : it's about living a life that is truly worthwhile, meaningful, and fulfilling. it implies realizing one's full potential as a human being and living in accordance with one's true values and purpose.
